Kasparek, Lillie (Elsik)

Lillie (Elsik) Kasparek, 74, of La Grange, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August, 30, 2012.

Lillie and her twin sister were born July 15, 1938 in Fayetteville, Texas, the daughters of Joe and Frances (Marusik) Elsik. She married Percy Lee Kasparek on May 8, 1960 in Fayetteville, and then moved to La Grange.

She worked in Columbus for the Colorado County Tax Office and then 18 years for GTE as a switchboard operator and later as Assistant Traffic Supervisor. Then she worked at Walmart for 13 years. She was a great cook, enjoyed gardening and working in her yard, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her beloved partner of 37 years, Melvin Schoenst of Carmine; her daughters: Wanona Posas and husband, Pete “Tootie” Posas, of Giddings, Lacinda Kasparek and husband, Frank Rodriguez, of Round Rock; two grandchildren: Pete Posas of Pflugerville and Joshua Posas of Giddings; three sisters: Gladys Colley of Hewitt, Millie Ruffin of Austin, and Nollie Odle of Northcrest; two sisters-in-law: Elaura Neumann of Shelby, Angeline Zwernemann and husband, Lloyd, of Carmine; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Lee, her parents, and an infant brother, Jimmy Elsik, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gus and Irene Kasparek, and three brothers-in-law: Woodrow Colley, Milton Neumann, and Elward Ruffin.

She will be remembered as a beloved partner, loving mother and nana. She will be greatly missed, but will live in our hearts forever.

Garlick, Lee Roy

Lee Roy Garlick, 76, of La Grange, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

He was born May 9, 1936 in Allamore, Texas, the ninth of twelve children, to William Frederick and Julia Segura Garlick. He married Nona Morris on July 8, 1957 in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

Lee Roy was born into a ranching family and worked from an early age on the sheep and cattle ranches of West Texas. He loved to raise and trade livestock, and cherished the friendships he developed through the years. Lee Roy was very active in supporting the FFA and 4-H programs through stock shows, and spent countless hours working with the kids on their projects.

Lee Roy attended Van Horn public schools and El Paso Community College. He served as a heavy weapons infantryman and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army from 1955-1959. He continued his public service in 1979, serving as County Commissioner of Culberson County, Texas.

Lee Roy worked in various fields throughout the years including ranching, farming, freight, and was a small business owner of a service station. However, his most treasured occupation was as a classroom tutor for ESL students and special needs students in the Fort Stockton ISD system from 1996 – 2004. He loved to work with kids and believed in the potential of every child he met.

Lee Roy and Nona retired and moved to La Grange, Texas in 2008. Together, they enjoyed the new friendships and the fellowship of the La Grange community. Lee Roy and his family enjoyed this time as it allowed him to become very active in supporting local sports, FFA and 4-H, and the community.

Lee Roy loved the Lord, and through death he gained Christ in a higher degree.

Survivors include his wife, Nona, of 55 years; four children: Levi Garlick and wife Becky; Marti Jo Stout and husband Justin; Lance Garlick; Jason Garlick and wife Shelah; nine grandchildren: Travis and Tanner Stout, Jacob, Hallie and Hannah Garlick, Capri and Loryn Garlick, Hayley Coleman, and Baby “G”; four sisters: Ida Mae Beasley of Carbondale, CO, Evelyn Enriquez of Dallas, Martha McElroy of Houston, Cecelia Petty of Pleasanton; three brothers: Henry Garlick of Fort Stockton, Marvin Garlick of Alpine, James Garlick of Balmorhea, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Vasek, Angela Agnes (Kubecka)

Angela Agnes (Kubecka) Vasek, 77, of La Grange, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

Angela was born August 24, 1935 in Plum, Texas, the daughter of Edward and Jennie (Kovar) Kubecka. She married Anton Thomas Vasek on April 7, 1956 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plum, Texas.

She worked for Phillips Petroleum as a map surveyor and was a member of operations for Alcohol Anonymous Alanon. She loved volunteer teaching at Hermes School in La Grange. She was active in the support of Combine Community Action for seniors. She enjoyed gardening and sold the produce she grew to family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Anton Thomas Vasek of La Grange; daughter, Laurann Vasek of La Grange; son, Barry Thomas Vasek and wife, Debbie, of Austin; four brothers: Bennie and wife, Mary, Richard of Spring, Gene of Oahu, Hawaii, and Anthony and wife, Jonda; grandson, Andrew and wife, Laura; great granddaughter, Margaret Ann; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Edward Kubecka.

Mazoch, Jerome Michael “Sonny”

Jerome Michael “Sonny” Mazoch, 86, of La Grange, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Jerome was born in Holman, Texas on September 29, 1926, the son of the late C. J. and Anna (Vacek) Mazoch.

Jerome served his country proudly in the United States Navy. He was a combat veteran of World War II and Korea. In the Navy, he was in the SEABEES (Construction Battalion). He was a graduate of La Grange High School and Blinn College. He was very active and involved in many different organizations. Jerome was a life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, American Legion Post #0102, South Central Texas Old Timers Baseball Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5254, and the Alumni Association of Blinn College. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, KJT, Fayette County Sheriff’s Posse, and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society. He was a past president of the Country Music Club of Fayette County and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society.

He is survived by his long time companion, Evelyn Jecmenek; son, Bruce Mazoch of Houston; two sisters: Agnes Struve of La Grange, and Alma Berger of Houston; two grandsons: Jason Michael Mazoch and Jerrod Mazoch; great grandson, Gavin Mazoch; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Chad Mazoch; two brothers: Jimmie Mazoch and John Mazoch; and sister, Leona Watzlavick.

Vanek, Vernelle (Muenzler)

1931-2012

Vernelle Norvella Edna (Muenzler) Vanek, 80, of La Grange, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 01, 2012 at Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas.

Vernelle was born in Willow Springs, Texas on August 11, 1931, the daughter of the late Ernst and Carrie (Finck) Muenzler. She was baptized at home and was confirmed on August 29, 1943. On April 10, 1954, she married Charles F. Vanek at Industry United Methodist Church.

Vernelle attended school in Fayetteville. She was a member of Industry United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She then joined Travis Street United Methodist Church which is now First United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir starting at the age of 16 through the age of 75. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and Friendship Sunday School Class. Vernelle was an organist for over 25 years. She was employed by Fayette Soil & Water Conservation District for 42 years, worked with 4-H, and with the Girl and Boy Scouts.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Baker of La Grange; two sons: Douglas Vanek and friend, Melisa Thames, of Beaumont, and David L. Vanek of La Grange; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Schultz and friend, Dan Lynd, of Nederland; three grandchildren: Alyson and Austen Vanek of Nederland, and Andrew Baker of La Grange; and numerous relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles F. Vanek, in January 1999; her sister, Evangeline Muenzler; and son-in-law, Larry Baker, in October 2011.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church in La Grange, Texas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2012. Burial will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.

Zatopek, Elsie Hildegard (Cook)

1912-2009

Mrs. Elsie Hildegard Zatopek, 96, of La Grange passed away Friday, February 27th, 2009 at Monument Hill Rehabilitation & Nursing Center

Elsie was born in Ellinger, Texas on October 2, 1912, the daughter of the late Frank and Pauline (Miller) Cook. Elsie was a very talented quilt maker and could make some of the best Kolaches in Fayette county. Elsie was a hard worker and a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

She is survived by: daughters, Ruby Bertsch and husband Leon of Sweeny,Tx; Vivian Renner and husband Wayland of Bloomingrove,Tx; grandchildren, Jerral Johnson and wife Cindy of Bellville,Tx; Elizabeth McGraw and husband Todd of Bloomingrove,Tx; Micheal Bertsch and wife Kelly of Sweeny, Tx; Mark Bertsch and wife Patti of Bay City, Tx; Marie Nairn and husband Ralph of Sweeny, Tx; Miron Bertsch and wife Julie of Tomball, Tx; Melinda Goodrum and husband Tim of Clute, Tx.

She is also survived by Great-Grandchildren, Carissa Johnson; Jerrad Johnson;Laura Bertsch; Amy Bertsch;Kyle, Wade, and Ross Nairn;Lindsey Bertsch; Leigh Bertsch; Sara Bertsch; Travis Bertsch;Katie and Lainie McGraw.

Mrs. Zatopek was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; eight brothers and sisters; great-granddaughter, Haley Bertsch;

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ellinger, TX, at 10:00AM on Monday, March 2nd, with Rev Fr. Stephen Nesrsta officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Marys Catholic Church Cemetery Ellinger, TX.

Friends may call Koenig & Strickland JECMENEK Chapel in Ellinger Sunday 5:00-7:00PM with a Holy Rosary being recited at 6:00PM.

Zapalac, Anita Zophia (Sladek)

1914-2010

Anita Zophia (Sladek) Zapalac, 95, long time La Grange resident, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Monument Hill Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

Anita was born on July 30, 1914 in Fayetteville, Texas to the late R.C. and Anna (Zapalac) Sladek. She was united in marriage with Louis Zapalac on June 10, 1935 and to this marriage two sons were born. She was a prominent and well respected business woman in La Grange until her retirement in 1978. She was very active after her retirement playing Bingo, fishing at the coast with her family, and traveling with her dear friends, Amanda Petras and Virginia Adamcik. Anita was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Sacred Heart Altar Society, and the hospital auxiliary.

Anita is survived by her two sons, Dr. Robert Zapalac and wife Mary of Alexandria, Virginia; Jim Zapalac and wife Sheron of La Grange; grandson, Russell Zapalac of Austin; granddaughters, Amy Heiden and husband David of Alexandria, Virginia; Laurie Zapalac of Boston, Massachusetts; Julie Zapalac of Lewisville; great-grandsons, David Francis and James Robert Heiden of Alexandria, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers: John, Arnold, Frank, and Ernest Sladek; and two sisters: Bessie Knesek and Mary Prasifka.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday June 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange, Texas, with Msgr. Harry Mazurkiewicz and Deacon Mike Meismer officiating. Interment will follow in the La Grange City Cemetery.

Lillie Millie (Kulhanek) Zapalac, 96, of La Grange, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Lillie was born in Colorado County, Texas on September 28, 1915, the daughter of the late Albert and Annie (Tomascheck) Kulhanek. She married Ben J. Zapalac on November 10, 1936 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger, Texas.

Lillie was a house wife and worked part-time at Kruez Meat Market. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a charter member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Annunciation #1962 since it was instituted in March, 1966.

She is survived by one daughter, Kay Karstedt and husband, James Karstedt, Sr. of La Grange; sister, Margie Halfmann and husband, Joe of Columbus; two sisters-in-law: Johnnie Mae Kulhanek and Bernice Zapalac both of La Grange; three grandchildren: James Karstedt, Jr. and wife, Julie; Katina Kunetka; John Karstedt and wife Bonny all of La Grange; five great grandchildren: Calley, Kolby and Madelyn Karstedt, Barrett and Wyatt Kunetka; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ben, of 67 years; seven sisters and 2 brothers.

Psencik, Martha Marie (Pietsch)

Martha Marie (Pietsch) Psencik, 78, of La Grange, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2010, at Care Inn of La Grange.

Martha was born in Fayette County on May 24, 1932, the daughter of the late Carl and Louise (Brabrandt) Pietsch. She married Jerome Arnold Psencik, Sr. on June 19, 1954 in La Grange. She worked as a Home Health Care Aid for 25 years.

She is survived by her sons: Jerome Psencik, Jr. and wife, Barbara, Rudolph Psencik, John Psencik and wife, Tanya all of La Grange; grandchildren: Ronnie Psencik and wife, Shannon, Randy Psencik and wife, Linda, Ross Psencik, Ryan Psencik, Christy Psencik, Richard Synatschk and wife Krystal, Jennifer Psencik, and Destiny Psencik all of La Grange; one great grandson Chase Psencik of Round Rock; and one sister Dorothy Smith of La Grange.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 52 years, Jerome Arnold Psencik, Sr.; one daughter Vera Mae Synatschk; and one brother Gene Pietsch.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. Family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Bragdon officiating. Interment will follow at the La Grange City Cemetery.

Matocha, Josie B. (Dusek)

1929-2011

Josie B. (Dusek) Matocha, 81, of La Grange, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Josie was born in La Grange, Texas, on June 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Srubar) Dusek. She is the widow of Lawrence Matocha and they were married on November 23, 1953, in Hostyn, Texas.

She is survived by her daughter Elaine Koehl and husband, Donnie, of La Grange and son Michael Matocha of Huntersville, North Carolina; one twin sister Martha Kovar of Houston; and three grandchildren: David Koehl and wife Sara, Melissa Koehl all of La Grange; Michael Jacob (Jake) Matocha of Huntersville, North Carolina and one great granddaughter Avery Koehl of La Grange; two sister-in-laws: Jane Dusek of Weimar and Irene Jasek of San Antonio and numerous nieces and nephews.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons: Leonard and Lawrence Matocha, Jr., five brothers: Jerry, Joe, Peter, Lad and Frank Dusek, three sisters: Annie Hrachovy, Agnes Jurica and Mary Sumbera.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 P.M. A Rosary will be recited by Deacon Mike Meismer at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 25, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange with Rev. Fr. Joseph Varickamackal officiating. A Rosary will be recited prior to the service by members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Annunciation No. 1962 . The Burial will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.
