Lidiak, Mary Rose (Janda)

1915-2010

Mary Rose (Janda) Lidiak died on Friday, January 8, 2010 at Breckenridge Hospital in Austin. She attained the age of 94 years, 3 months, and 26 days.

Born on September 12, 1915 to the late C.M. and Bessie (Kallus) Janda at Hostyn, Mary was the third of eleven children. After attending schools at Swiss Alp, Hostyn and La Grange, she graduated from St. Rose High School in Schulenburg in 1934.

On November 17, 1936, she married Jerome Lidiak at Hostyn. They spent the first 28 years of their married life farming in the Hostyn/Ammansville area and at that time were members of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Five children were born to their union: Leonard, Gloria, Aurelia, Virginia and Max. In 1964, Mary and Jerome sold their farm and moved to La Grange, where she has resided ever since. They then joined the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In 1962 Mary started working at Fayette Memorial Hospital in La Grange, first as a nurse’s aide and then as a ward clerk. After 30 years of working at the hospital, she retired and joined the Hospital Auxiliary and worked in the gift shop for several years. Her husband, Jerome, preceded her in death on June 5, 1993.

Mary was well known by family and friends for her excellent cooking and hospitality. She was very devoted to her Catholic faith and her family. Growing up, her brothers and sisters thought of her as their “second mother” and to this day most of them still do. There was usually a pot of stew, chicken noodle soup or some kolaches to enjoy when they came to visit. On many days, when her sister Frances was in the assisted living facility, Mary brought her soup or another favorite food for Frances to enjoy. Her brother Ben and sister Ann, along with many other friends and relatives, enjoyed Mary’s delicious meals frequently. Her door was always open and her table always shared.

Mary enjoyed canning, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She made many beautiful quilts as gifts for all her children and grandchildren. And when each great-grandchild was born, she had a little quilt ready for the baby. They all cherish the quilts made with her loving hands.
